SPMS Treble II Choir

The Stuart Pepper Middle School Treble II Chorus, comprised of approximately 90 girls, traveled to the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville on February 9, for a very special concert. They were one of two middle school choirs selected from the state to perform for the 2018 Kentucky Music Educators Conference. Choirs that receive distinguished performance ratings at their district KMEA assessment are encouraged to submit recordings for consideration. The recordings are then judged and evaluated by a panel of judges, ultimately resulting in the choirs selected to perform at the convention. It is quite an accomplishment and honor to be selected, and it is a first for SPMS!

The girls found out at the first of the school year that they would be performing for the conference, and have worked diligently to perfect a program of six selections, presenting a variety of styles, time periods, and languages. As the choir took their places on the risers, Mrs. Shirley Jones, who was choir director at SPMS and MCHS for many years, introduced the choir and their directors, Derek Crafton and Shaune Rebilas. Many of the pieces included accompaniment by guest musicians: David Phillips, Assistant Principal at SPMS played percussion on two of the selections, Aaron Lay, Assistant Band Director, played trumpet, and Dr. Phillip Brisson, Music Director at the Cathedral of the Assumption, accompanied the girls on the organ. At the conclusion of the concert, the audience of music educators and parents rewarded the choir with a standing ovation. According to Tavia Ferry, “I think we were well prepared for the circumstances of singing in a new place.” Singing at a large venue such as the Cathedral is very special experience, and something the students will remember forever. Amber Settles exclaimed "It's so beautiful here, I think I'm in heaven!"
